Are shyness and sociability still a dangerous combination for substance use? Evidence from a US and Canadian sample

چکیده
A number of studies have suggested that shyness and sociability may be orthogonal dimensions of personality, each of which is associated with distinct behavioral and psychophysiological correlates, and that a combination of shyness and sociability may be a risk factor for illicit drug use. We examined whether self-reported shyness, sociability, and sensation seeking measures predicted substance use and substance use related behaviors in separate samples of undergraduates in the US and Canada. We found that a combination of shyness and sociability predicted substance use related behaviors in the US sample above and beyond either shyness or sociability alone, replicating and extending previous research. However, this pattern was not found for the Canadian sample. Interestingly, individuals in the Canadian sample who were low in shyness and low in sociability were likely to report high substance use. We also noted that individuals who scored high on measures of sensation seeking were likely to score high on substance use and substance use related behaviors across both samples, replicating previous work. Findings suggest that, while shyness alone may be a protective factor for substance use, a combination of shyness and sociability may be a possible risk factor for substance use and abuse in some cultural contexts. 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Recent evidence suggests that a combination of shyness and sociability is associated with distinct behavioral and psychophysiological correlates at rest and in response to social stress and may be a risk factor for developmental psychopathology in children and illicit substance use in adolescents and young adults. Using the Cheek and Buss (1981) measurement model on the relative independence of...

Previous empirical studies have shown that the personality trait of shyness, either alone or in combination with varying levels of sociability (i.e., a socially-conflicted profile--high shyness with high sociability) to be a reliable predictor of various psychopathologies, including substance abuse and mood disorders. Extending these findings to other forms of dysregulated behaviours, we examin...

Numerous studies have suggested that shyness and sociability may be orthogonal personality traits, each of which are associated with distinct behavioural and psychophysiological correlates. Shyness has been linked to a variety of adverse mental health outcomes, and individuals who are high on both shyness and sociability (conflicted subtype) may be particularly at risk. The current study first ...

Background Sociability and shyness are orthogonal personality traits, wherein both are characterized by varying behavioral and psychophysiological correlates. Shyness should not be equated with the lack of sociability, as shyness relates to discomfort that occurs in the presence of others and sociability is identified with an individual's preference for being with others rather than alone. Ob...

Background In the United States (US), there are 19 million new sexually transmitted disease (STD) infections each year. Untreated STDs can lead to serious long-term adverse health consequences, especially for young women. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that undiagnosed and untreated STDs cause at least 24,000 women in the US each year to become infertile. This clearly is a...
